Working at sea requires specific medical clearances. Here's what you need and where to get it.

What is an ENG1?

The ENG1 is a seafarer medical certificate required by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Since many yachts are UK-flagged, it's the most commonly requested medical certificate in the industry.

What Does the Exam Cover?

The examination includes vision tests, hearing tests, urinalysis, blood pressure, and a general physical. The doctor assesses whether you're fit for sea service.

How Long is it Valid?

The ENG1 is valid for 2 years for most seafarers, or 1 year if you're under 18.

Where to Get One

ENG1 examinations must be conducted by MCA-approved doctors. Major yachting hubs have approved examiners. Cost: approximately £100-150.

Other Medical Certificates

  • ML5 — Alternative used by some flag states
  • PEME — Required for some cruise ships

Tips for Passing

Get enough sleep before your exam. If you wear glasses, bring them. Disclose any conditions honestly — many can be accommodated.
